Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson hears about a successful scheme to link graduates with future employees

Sefton Central Labour MP Bill Esterson heard first-hand how Liverpool University is helping graduates to find work across Merseyside and at the same time helping small and medium sized businesses to recruit highly qualified staff.

Bill met with Steve Wood, who runs the University Careers Service, Graduate to Merseyside unit, which matches potential staff with employers who want graduates to come and work for them.

The service places recently qualified graduates in marketing, engineering, science and sales roles across Merseyside and has seen 360 young people find jobs with businesses since it was set up three years ago.

Steve Wood told Bill: “The team’s role is to create jobs and opportunities for the graduates who leave our universities. The evidence from businesses who have used the service shows the value of recruiting recent graduates.”

Bill said he was encouraged by the success of the Graduate to Merseyside project.

Bill said: “If businesses are creating jobs, then we need to match potential recruits to vacancies. Those businesses who want to recruit well qualified graduates can really benefit from having a service like Graduate to Merseyside and Steve is clearly doing an excellent job in matching businesses and potential recruits. Any business which wants to recruit a graduate can find out more at www.graduatetomerseyside.co.uk and graduates can also register on the website.

“Graduate to Merseyside is great news for anyone interested in recruiting a graduate or for any graduate wanting help finding a job.

“Liverpool University clearly recognises its responsibility in helping find graduates a job given the high fees now being charged for a degree. Having a good, well paid job at the end of a degree course is vital in the current economic climate not least as a way of paying off those student debts.

“So I was very pleased to meet Steve Wood and to hear about all the good work he is doing. I would encourage graduates and businesses alike to look at the Graduate to Merseyside website and hope that Steve and his colleagues can go from strength to strength to help with job creation and recruitment in these tough times.”

Steve added: “We welcome Bill’s support in the work that we are doing to help businesses and graduates in Sefton and the wider Liverpool City region.”
